A Spy Detective Party for a 7th Birthday
Yay, what a party! Finlay is a partier. It was a blast. Because just like that, he is seven! SEVEN! How is time going so fast?

HOW TO HOLD A SPY DETECTIVE PARTY
Finlay wanted a Spy Secret Agent Detective party for his birthday. He loves all things spy and secret agent, his favourite programme is Odd Squad he regularly makes traps and tricks for his sisters and loves to set up spy dens and sneaks around of a Saturday! So, a Spy Party it was with 10 friends invited from school plus his siblings. I was excited to meet some of his friends from school because since moving schools last year, I hadn’t really had a chance to meet them all. I love planning a party on a theme – I guess it’s super easy these days with Pinterest at our fingertips! Pinterest has it’s pros and cons though – Some of the ideas I found for Spy Party games were terrific. It really is fun to look for all the things you could do should you have the time, inclination, and supplies. But then it’s also super good to adapt all the ideas for the real world!
If I was to do this party again I’d probably make sure we had a few more activities to hand to ensure that they all keep active (particularly if you have a lot of boys attending) it is a million percent better than running out of things to do with 20-30 minutes left. That would invite mutiny. We ran out of active games towards the end and decided to send them out into the garden, they loved this though so it didn’t matter! You could always keep a reserve activity (like a spy movie) in case you are running short. You can try these secret codes for kids to keep them busy at the party!
Secret Agent Party Games and Ideas
Finlay was involved in picking all the games and I think our planning for it was just as much fun as the actual party. Finlay was really excited for some of the games that we didn’t end up playing because Finlay’s friends were probably a little too excited for sit down games at some points, so we played them the next day instead! Coping with boisterous boys was only made possible by my lovely sister and Finlay’s wonderful godmother (both primary teachers) coming up and basically leading all the games whilst I faffed around with music and food! Everyone needs a Fran and Hannah in their lives!
We started off the theme with sending code invites that the kids had to crack – it revealed a password and a secret handshake that they had to learn and say on the door! I bought this brilliant printable set off Etsy which basically set out our whole party. They provided the invites and then also it made ID passes for the kids to have when they arrive – we had lots of fun choosing all the secret spy names for his friends! Finlay chose his spy name to be 007 Triple Ace! After they received their ID badge, they filled out a fun Spy questionnaire to test their eligibility to be super spies! Then we started the games!
Spy Party Games
Dress up Spies
The boys chose their outfit from the funniest fancy dress we had (and some quirky objects thrown in) and then Fran awarded the best spy costume with a prize! Next, we put the boys in teams and had a relay – they ran up and down the room, adding a piece of fancy dress. The team that won was the first back with all their costume on! Surprisingly the boys LOVED this game – I thought they might be a bit too self conscious for dressing up but they loved it!
Malteser Straw Relay
Next, we gave the boys some maltesers and they had to suck them up with straws, to make it last they had to pass one malteser one way and another malteser the other and the first team with their malteser back was the winner! This was to test their abilities as Secret Agent and Spies.
Marble Feet
To further test their spy agility, the boys had to transfer the marbles from one bowl to another with their feet! Again, this was another good game – it started off with only two of them wanting a go but then we turned it into a relay because they all wanted a turn!
Spy Detective Activities for Secret Agent Parties
After these frantic games, we had some code breaking sessions using these brilliant Star Wars themed codes and then also my sister led the group in devising some secret spy messages with invisible ink. The white crayon to write the message and then coloured with watercolours over the top worked the best. We did try some other methods such as baking soda revealed with grape juice – but this didn’t work so well.
Spy Party Cake
I sent Mr M into the front room with the boys to shoot nerf guns at a target. This may seem an insane idea, and kind of was but the original plan was for it to be outside but it was really muddy. I did also think of using silly string shot at a target but thankfully I did change my mind about this one at the last minute! It got them out of the way anyway to put the food out. I kept it really simple this year and just did Pizza, Chips and then mini bomb cakes for pudding (Tunnocks Teacakes with a Strawberry lace stuck in the top!!) Then we revealed the bomb cake which I made using two pudding basin cakes and hollowed out the middle to add skittles inside and we had sparklers on the top to make it lool like an exploding bomb.
Detonate the Bomb!
For the last game (and the one I think they enjoyed the best) we blew up a black balloon with a small challenge inside (such as hop on one leg for one minute) then everyone had a balloon tied to their ankle and had to stamp on it to ‘detonate the bomb’. Once the bombs were detonated, we stood in a circle for them to perform their challenge for a prize!

Other Spy Party Games
Identify the Fingerprint
At the beginning of the party, we took the boys fingerprints. Divide the players into two even teams. Collect all the fingerprint cards from each team (keeping them separated). Give each team the other teams set of fingerprint cards. On the start of go, each team must pair the fingerprint cards together with their match. The first team that matches all fingerprints correctly is the winner!
Memory Game
This is a classic! Spies need a good memory so before the party, get a tray and fill it with unusual and small objects. Vary the number of objects according to the ages of your children. Give each child a pencil and paper and ask them to write their name at the top. Uncover the tray and place it where all children can see it. Give the children a certain amount of time to memorise the contents of the tray, then cover it up again. The person who remembers the most – wins!
Find the Stick of Dynamite
For this you’ll need to make some dynamite sticks. You can do this simply by using red candles or wrapping five paper towel cardboard with red tissue paper. Tape all of them into a bundle using black electrical tape. If you have spare wires or coils you can add those to make them seem more realistic. Hide them around the house and use the mission impossible theme song for them to find the stick of dynamite.
