A Wizarding Harry Potter Party!

Elodie turned 10! She’s now a double digits girl which makes me feel very old but she was super excited to turn 10! We celebrated with a Harry Potter Party – her and a few of her friends are the biggest fans – well, really who isn’t? Elodie had also wanted a making, crafty kind of party so we combined the two and had a Harry Potter Making party!

Harry Potter Party Ideas

We began the party with some Butterbeer floats which was an acquired taste because Butterbeer (according to Harry Potter World) should be made with Cream Soda and Sainsburys no longer stock Cream Soda!!! What ridiculousness is this? Apparently it didn’t get the sales so our local Sainsburys have taken it off the shelves! Well, we searched a few local shops as we couldn’t have a Harry Potter Party without some Butterbeer but to no avail, so we made our Butterbeer with Lemonade instead which I don’t think is as tasty.

Butterbeer Harry Potter Recipe

• Butterscotch (or caramel ice cream)
• Ice Cream Soda
• Caramel Sauce (warmed up), we used Sainsburys Salted Caramel sauce
• Butterscotch or toffee pieces (you can find these in the baking section)
• Whipped Cream (we just used squirty cream).

Place a spoonful of ice cream into the cream soda, squirt some cream on top and add the hot caramel sauce with the butterscotch pieces on top. It sort of froths a bit like a potion – which adds to the magic!

Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes

As an accompaniment to the Butterbeer, the girls had a Harry Potter Sorting Hat Cupcakes to decide which house they were in! These were really easy to make and a lot of fun to try. All the girls wanted to see which house they had been placed in! You make some normal fairy cupcakes, scoop out the middle and add red, yellow, green or blue M and M’s for the different coloured houses. Ice the top so you can’t see the M and Ms peeking through and then offer to your guests to see which house the sorting hat picks! Finlay was not impressed when he was made a Slytherin!

Harry Potter Necklaces

Next we made potion necklaces. We used tiny small beads, mini potion bottles and small key charms and threaded them together on a ribbon to make mini Harry Potter Necklaces. I’ve linked to the ones we used in case you want to make something similar. The girls loved doing this and spent ages perfecting their necklace and colour coordinating their mini beads inside the potion bottle!

When everyone had a necklace we made Potion Slime! This had been the bit Elodie was most insistent about – we needed to make slime! There’s so many slime recipes out there on the web so we tried a few different ways prior to the party and found this one to be the easiest and the most successful…….

Harry Potter Slime

• Elmers Clear Glue
• Elmers Glitter Glue
• Glitter
• Soap Colourant
• Contact Lens Solution
• Baking Soda
• Takeaway pot to take the slime home.

Add around half of a Elmers Glue Bottle into a bowl and mix in some glitter and glitter glue. Choose the colour you’d like your slime to be by adding a few drops of soap colourant (soap colouring doesn’t stain your skin as much as food colouring). Add a teaspoon on baking soda and mix together really well. Lastly, add a tablespoon of contact lens solution and mix very well. If the slime does not come together after a really good mix, add another tablespoon of the contact lens solution. Continue mixing and adding the solution until the slime comes away easily from the bowl and isn’t as sticky. The more the slime is squished with your hands, the less sticky it becomes. Do not add too much contact lens solution because it will become hard, we found it rarely needed more than 2-3 tablespoons to make the slime but it depends on how much glue you have added.

We did have plans to make some more potions – I was going to give the girls pipettes and using these glass Science Beakers (which I thought would make them feel like proper Scientists) they were going to experiment by adding small amounts of bicarbonate of soda, baking powder and vinegar together with food colouring to see which made the best potion. However, we did this as a fun weekend experiment instead as the girls played with the slime for so long that it was then time to have some food and watch the film (Harry Potter of course!)

How to make a VERY easy Harry Potter Birthday Cake

Making a Harry Potter Birthday cake was the thing that baffled me the most but in the end we opted for a simple chocolate cake decorated with star sprinkles and made Quidditch Balls out of Ferrero Rocher and mini card wings!

In the end it was a lovely Harry Potter Party – a good transition towards a more grown up party that I expect Elodie will want in the future. I cannot believe we’re heading towards her last couple of years at primary school! I can remember exactly how we felt bringing her home 10 years ago. Oh how much has changed, she’s the eldest of four and is meticulous, funny and perseveres at everything she tries. We’re so very proud of her and can’t wait to see her blossom at being ten!
