Snow Day Magic
Oh haven’t the snow days been lovely – we had them, even in London! Snow – it’s always like a dream. Just when I thought our chances for snow were gone for the season, we had a quick flurry the first day and then on the second – there were flakes as big as feathers. I’ve never seen such big snowflakes. When we got word that the kid’s school would be closed on the third day- I was so excited for them! Snow is the proper stuff of childhood and I was so pleased that they got to enjoy it – even for the briefest of days. Finlay was particularly ecstatic, followed swiftly by Elodie – they were so eager get outside! Finlay really feels the cold and so I insisted they wrapped up warm given he had been soooooo cold walking back through the mini snowstorm on the way home the day before. But I did have to laugh when he came down wearing 3 pairs of pants!
I think if we lived in a snowy country, we’d never leave the house! Doesn’t it take such a long time to get ready to go out?! Gloves on, scarves on…….with all the wrapping and layering it took us forever to get geared up. I utilised our friend, Elkie’s tip the kids wore plastic bags on their feet in between two pairs of socks and under wellies. I think it did help them stay out playing in the snow – they were out there for over an hour and there was more snow building and clearing than there was snow ball fights. They even pitched their toy tent and had a little snack in there! I went out with little Archie who had a ball just watching the older ones and I had fun remembering how excited I was when I was little to walk in the fresh snow and be the ‘first footprints’ – the magic and wonder of a snow day is definitely not limited to little ones! Archie was a bit unsure of the snow – as long as I was close by or holding him, he was fine!
Once their little fingers started to get too cold we hustled back in for hot chocolate and some TV snuggling. Later, when Mr M had finished working – we dragged the sledges out of the loft and headed out to Beckenham Place Park for a a couple of hours of sledging. It was so much fun – even Archie loved it!
And then it all melted in a rush. By the following day, everything was gone. The sun shone in the morning on the fourth day and the snow started to run away with the shadows across the back garden. Our March snow flurry was over! Everyone needs a few days of snow a year for some fun and magic but then it’s also kind of nice to get back to a reality of sorts!
