How to Make Rose Petal Bath Bombs

Our kids are obsessed with making garden potions and rose petal perfume! They mix up concoctions in the bath, in the garden and (if I let them) they’d be in the kitchen all the time hatching experiments! So we decided for Miss Elodie’s pamper party for her 8th Birthday Party, we’d try making some fizzy Rose Petal Bath Bombs – they worked a treat! These bath bombs smell delicious and make bath times lots of fun! It was quite hard keeping little fingers away to leave them to completely dry for a few days but the fizz in the bath was worth the wait. If you’d like to make your own Rose Petal Bath Bombs – it’s easy! Scroll down for the recipe!

How to Make Rose Petal Bath Bombs

If you’d like to make your own DIY Rose Petal bath bombs……you will need:
  • Food Colouring or soap colouring, the liquid type works better than the gel (optional)
  •  2 tablespoons Olive Oil, almond oil (or Coconut oil)
  • A Spray Bottle
  • Rose Petals from the garden (optional!)
  •  300g Bicarbonate of Soda*
  •  100g Citric Acid (available from Amazon)*
  •  Silicon ice cube tray (silicon tray is better than an ice cube plastic one because the bath bombs could get stuck and crumble in plastic.)
  • Essential oils or bath oil, few drops of (any type works, we used Rose Garden bath oils) *please always be careful when using essential oils and follow the instructions on the label.
*You may need more or less of this ingredient depending on your mixture and your silicon tray. When you choose your silicon tray – hearts work better than stars, don’t get shapes that are too intricate or have sharp corners that could break off. A chocolate making silicon tray also works well.
1. Mix your bicarb of soda, citric acid, essential oils, almond or coconut oil and 1 drop of your chosen food colouring (optional) in a bowl. Be careful not to add too much food colouring or oil or the mixture will start to fizz. Gel food colouring works perfectly for this!how to make bath bombs
2. Tear up the rose petals into tiny pieces and add. You can use a food processor for this if you like but little ones often like snipping them with scissors!
3. Add a couple of sprays of water and mix together well. When you can indent your spoon to make a shape in the mixture, you are ready to transfer to your ice cube or silicon trays. If the mixture is too crumbly – spray some more water. (Using a spray bottle is preferable because this disperses the water evenly and finely. You can buy one or empty a cleaning bottle – just remember it clean it really well!)  It should only need 2-3 sprays of water. It will start to sizzle as the bicarbonate of soda reacts with the water. Don’t add too much water or it will just fizzle up too much and then you won’t have any fizz in the bath!!
3.  Press your mixture firmly into your ice cube tray (silicon trays help stop the bath bombs from crumbling). Make sure little ones don’t touch their eyes at this point or they may get irritated.

4. Leave to set for one to two days…..It’s hard but worth the wait!
5. Make sure they are completely dry and hardened, then remove gently and place in your bath.
Enjoy the fizz!

Other Bath Bomb Recipe Ideas

There are lots of different bath bombs variation to try, if you want to make a bath bomb without citric acid – you can use (120 g) of salt (Epsom salts, sea salt, or non-iodized table salt). We found it didn’t have quite the same amount of fizz but it is kinder for sensitive skin. This recipe here also uses no citric acid – they have replaced with lemon juice. You could also try adding lavender for some sleep inducing bath bombs or some chamomile for a relaxing and calming bath bomb!
