Looking for family friendly outdoor activities to do in Norfolk? There are a great many lovely outdoor things to do in Norfolk and it’s very family friendly – it’s a brilliant place for a UK family staycation. Norfolk has wonderful countryside and the broads are brilliant for family walks and exploring – see our favourite outdoor places to explore with kids in Norfolk below. 

A few years ago, we took a little holiday in Norfolk, on the Suffolk borders. It was such a fab holiday – we had 3 little ones at the time. We also visited Suffolk on our last ever holiday as a couple – about a month before Elodie was due! Both Suffolk and Norfolk are fantastic places for family holidays in the UK so I thought I’d write about the fun things to do outdoors in Norfolk with kids.

Kid Friendly Activities in Norfolk

Bewilderwood

BeWILDerwood – Is such a lovely place for kids to visit in Norfolk. Ours still talk about visiting here several years on! BeWILDerwood is an outdoor adventure park based on the children’s books of local author Tom Blofeld, which are set in this whimsical woodland. The stories are brought to life with storytelling sessions, tree top playgrounds based on the homes from the books and boat rides through the beautiful countryside. Children can make dens, enjoy face-painting, story telling, craft making and running wild in mazes, tree houses, slippery slope slides and wobbly wire zip lines! High Lodge Thetford

High Lodge is a great place for an outdoor adventure with kids in Norfolk. There are several walking trips around the forest and you can follow the Gruffalo Sculpture Tour here. High Lodge has a Go Ape course you can book as well as Archery. There are cycling trails, forest Segway to hire and several play areas for kids. Occasionally, they even have live music events. It’s a brilliant outdoors activity in Norfolk which suits kids of all ages.

Whitlingham Adventure

If you’re an adventure loving family – Whitlingham Adventure offers a wide range of water sports activities including kayaking, canoeing, raft building, Windsurfing and paddle boarding. They also have land-based adventures such as climbing experiences, archery, orienteering, Mountain biking and bouldering. It’s a perfect outdoor activity for the whole family in Norfolk. 

Holkam Hall

Holkham Hall is a must visit place if you’re looking for an outdoor activity to do with kids in Norfolk. There are cycling trails, a nature reserve, walking trails and a ropes course to keep older kids entertained (although it’s suitable for children over 1m tall.) if you have older kids and want to get them outside you’ll need our… There’s also a lovely woodland play area and boats are available to hire. It even has its own nature reserve and beach! You can easily spend a whole day outdoors here! 

Things to do with kids on a Rainy Day in Norfolk

If it’s raining when you visit -don’t despair, there are some fun activities for a rainy day in Norfolk with kids…..

AMAZONA ZOO CROMER

One of the best outdoor activities for families in Norfolk, Located just a short drive from Cromer, Amazona Zoo is a truly unique experience. Enjoy 200 animals from tropical South America including jaguars, parrots, moneys, snakes, flamingos, guinea pigs and tapirs. With acres of parkland and play areas to enjoy, Amazona Zoo is a perfect family day out.

Wroxham Miniature World

Wroxham miniature attraction is an indoor attraction of tiny worlds made up of many zones including model railways in various scales, slot car displays, a whole city made from LegoTM bricks, model boat displays, Vintage Penny Arcade, Interactive Flight Simulators, Train Simulators, and a host of toys from across the decades – it’s fun for a wide age range. 

They have an onsite café for ice creams too! 

Seal Tour 

A must do experience if you like animals is to Take a boat trip to see the SEALS in their natural environment basking on BLAKENEY POINT with TEMPLES SEAL TRIPS. The trip lasts about an hour and Norfolk has some of the largest colonies of seals (Grey and Common) to be found in the UK. The seal trips (by boat) offer an exciting experience combined with the chance to learn more about the seals. 

Funkys

When the weather’s bad outside, kids will love to warm up at Funkys – a roller skating rink with an amazing adventure play area over three floors, all ages of children (and adults) will find something to do here.

Best walks for families in Norfolk

Dunwich Heath Beach Circular Walk – An easy 5 mile walk with beach views and beautiful Heather. Some parts of buggy friendly unless there has been heavy rain in which case some places can become very muddy.

Felbrigg Norfolk Mountain Walk

This long-distance route serves up sweeping coast views and takes you through wooded paths and to the top of Incleborough Hill where you’ll find picturesque views over Cromer. Challenge the kids to climb Beeston Bump for the coast view of Sheringham. This is a 16 mile walk so might be best to split into a couple of days, it’s a moderate walk with some steep inclines but fun for kids if they like climbing.

Cley Marshes Circular Walk

This is an easy 3 mile walk That is buggy friendly apart from a short stretch on a stony beach. The salt marshes offer amazing views as well as the chance to spot rare birdlife and even water voles and otters on the water. You can even immerse the family in history by looking for  World War II relics including a pillbox and gun turret.

Pensthorpe Natural Park – is a fab place to visit for a family day out.  There are beautiful gardens to walk around, lakeside nature trails and woodland walks, flamingos, cranes and ducks and geese gallore. It also has a fab adventure playground and an indoor play area too.

One of the best outdoor activities for families in Norfolk is to visit Pensthorpe Natural Park. It has a stream to paddle in, an unusual arts sculpture nature trail and an amazing outdoor eco-play area called WildRootz.

It’s one of the best natural outdoor play areas we’ve seen where kids can have fun by scaling 30ft towers, swinging from zip-wires, venturing into underground tunnels and flying down twisty, worm-like slides. If it’s raining, there’s also Hootz House Indoor adventure Play.

North Norfolk Railway  – This makes a lovely trip for kids and you can combine it with popping in to see ‘Broad Sidlinch’ a 300 square foot model railway, and visit the Railway museum.

Fulfill the kids dreams and go Mud Sliding at Burnham Overy Staithe what an amazing thing for kids to do – slide around in mud and then wash off in the sea!

Wroxham Junior Farm – This a great farm for kids with animals to feed and cuddle, face painting and an animal tour.

Family Days Out in Norfolk

Sandringham Estate –

We were able to park for free at Sandringham and use their large adventure playground also for free. You are also able to walk around some of the estate again for free. There is 243 hectares available for visitors to enjoy. There are two waymarked Nature Trails, one 1½ miles long and the other 2½ miles long, and there are many other woodland paths to explore.

Beaches are also lovely in Cromer and Wells – good for warmer weather days but also great for a winter’s walk along the front.

Felbrigg has a great adventure playground for kids with sandpits to play in and beautiful gardens and a house to explore. 

If you looking for a gorgeous family cottage to stay in with the family – try SALT for some stunning properties! There’s pretty houses in lots of different areas for all sizes of family.

Great Yarmouth

There are loads of things to do for families in Great Yarmouth! As well as the Pleasure Beach and the Time and Tide Museum – you could also try the Hippodrome or try a Great Yarmouth treasure trail to make sure you take in all the sights!
