Best UK family holiday destinations: Wales
This year, we were lucky enough to go to France. It was our first family holiday abroad as we normally holiday in the UK or we visit our lovely parents house in Ireland. We love family staycations in the U.K, mainly for ease with young kids but also for cost purposes so I thought I’d share our favourite holiday-ing U.K destinations in case you fancy a little holiday in lovely England too (although, ultimately the West Coast of Ireland is our all time favourite place for a holiday – you should definitely check this out too.) Wales is a great place for views and walking or hiking – check out our favourite family walks in Wales and our top tips for making walks fun for kids! Wales one of the best U.K family holiday destinations and definitely makes it into our top five places to holiday in the UK!
Best U.K family holiday destination: Wales
A few years ago we went to Wales, we only had two little ones at the time and it was the first proper trip to Wales for all of us (aside of trips to Holyhead to get the ferry to Ireland.) It was before we had this blog to record things in but it was the dreamiest of weeks, and totally one of the best first family holidays we could’ve asked for!
Wales has so much to offer a family – lots of countryside walks, sand dunes beautiful beaches – there are so many beaches that you really are spoiled for choice. This was possibly our favourite thing to do in Wales, we spent the week rock pooling and catching crabs and swimming in the sea. Blissful! Two absolute beauts for beaches in Wales are Three Cliffs Bay and Caswell Bay at Gower – perfect for body boarding and rock pools – just check the tide information before you go! Read here for more ideas of beaches to visit in Wales.

Proof that little Finlay found something yucky in the rock pool!
There are also some lovely historic sites such as the National Trust property Plas Newydd House at Anglesey which has a lovely play area and glorious tree houses! For more nature fun – you can spot butterflies and take a beautiful walk through the forest to discover waterfalls at The National Botanic Gardens. A lovely place to for those with families that want somewhere to burn energy and climb there is a beautiful hill top walk at Loggerhead Country Park in North Wales. A totally family friendly little gem!

You’re also not short of wonderful castles to visit in Wales. The National trust property of Penrhyn Castle is a real beauty. You can even take a Dragon Hunting Adventure at Caerphilly Castle what small person would not love that?

For a lovely place to stay in Wales, try these gorgeous selection of holiday homes in Abersoch which cater for every budget with pretty self-catering cottages, period properties, chalets in The Warren leisure park and spacious boutique-style luxury houses. Or a real family favourite is Bluestone Family Friendly National Park Resort. To discover all available accommodation in the area, check out holiday homes in Wales with cozycozy.
If you’re looking for something a little different and also perfect for a not-so-great-weather-kind of day – try Llechwedd Slate Caverns Deep Mine Tour – light shows and images projected on the cave, make this a particularly magical kind of trip!
Another family fun day out is the Rheidol Steam Railway running from Aberystwyth to Devil’s Bridge. It passes through stunning countryside with majestic red kites to spot overhead. The full journey lasts around an hour so it’s perfect for small children too.

For all the food lovers, there are some fun food markets – a perfect way to spend a day was for us to visit the beach in the morning and then head to the food market at Gwyl Fwyd Caernarfon. They also have a festival there once a year in May – I would so love to visit for that!
There are cable cars that offer you the most amazing view if you head to Ormes in North Wales. The journey takes you from Happy Valley up to the Summit Complex. On the way you get to see fantastic views of Llandudno and towards the Little Orme. You also pass over the Llandudno Ski Slope and further along you will cross over the expanse that is the Orme itself and pass by the Great Orme Copper Mines.

And that’s it! Wales- you were a blast! Holidaying in Wales made us realise we do not need to go abroad to have the bestest family holiday. We all came back happier, more relaxed, and ready to plan our next family adventure.
