Stick Butterfly Nature Craft

Our kids love butterflies and they are the cutest thing to create as a nature craft activity. A stick butterfly is an easy nature craft to make and perfect for playing with colours and for using up sticks that your kids collect on a family walk. This year we raised butterflies from caterpillars which was so much fun we’re going to do it every year! The kids were fascinated with the butterflies and so a butterfly nature craft seemed the perfect thing to make. Kids are always bringing sticks home from a nature walk so I’m often on the lookout for things that can be made with them. Leaves are something else our kids like to collect all the time so we’ve written about our favourite leaf crafts for kids too.

Before you get started in making your Butterfly Nature Craft – it’s fun to go on a walk to collect the best sticks (this can take a long time to decide on the best stick!) or find any other nature bits and bobs that might be useful!

The lovely thing about this butterfly craft is your kids can have so much fun experimenting with colours and coffee filters to make the beautiful butterfly wings.

To make the nature butterfly stick craft, you will need:

How to make a Stick Butterfly

Take your coffee filter paper and draw pretty patterns and dots onto it with felt pens. These are going to be the butterfly’s wings. Experiment with different colours and patterns. Try to leave some of the coffee filter paper white for the full effect! Once your felt pens patterns are finished, fill some small pots with water and use the pipettes to drop small amounts of water onto the filter paper. Watch the colours fade and bleed into each other on the filter paper. This is a little bit of a science experiment for kids and they can practise swirling colours together or mixing colours to make new ones. Or try these outdoor science experiments you can do at home……

Next, cut the paper into butterfly shaped wings and tie or glue the stick or twig to make the butterfly body. You can even give it antennaes using small berries or flower stalks.

And there you have a gorgeous stick butterfly!
