Unique Present Ideas for 6-8 year olds
Looking for unique present ideas for a 6-8 year old? It gets harder and harder to buy presents for children doesn’t it? I’m always on the look out for presents that will last a few years as opposed to ones that are ‘faddy’ and I prefer things to make or do or read over those that only provide some entertainment for 10 seconds, oh and if it’s educational then that’s a winner too! I think I’m quite a fussy gift giver, but I want to know that whoever receives it is going to play with it fondly (and, fingers crossed keep them busy so mum’s and dads can get their shizzle sorted!)
I have a girl and boy soon to be aged 6 and 8 and in some ways this is the hardest age to buy for. The 6-year-old to 8 year old is a busy child. At home, your 6-8 year old is still your little one who isn’t quite ready for big-kid toys but at school they are inquisitive and keen on learning and keeping up with the big kids. I’ve rounded up some of Elodie’s and Finlay’s best buys for the 6-8 year-old in your life, from their perspective! Unique present ideas for 6-8 year olds
This is a fold out space scene which shows a timeline of space activity from the discovery of the planets, the first man on the moon all the way to the present day and children can add the stickers for each historical event. I like this present because it folds up nice and neat to keep it tidy and it’s useful for taking away on holidays! Elodie and Finlay love it because they can extend it out across the whole table and they have the choice over whether to stick the historical, factual stickers on one side or whether to make a fantasy/ alien world on the other side!
I know I said gender neutral and, on first glance this fashion book may look a little girly but actually Finlay enjoys this just as much as Elodie! The idea is you become a fashion designer by flipping over the pages and mix/ match the outfits. Some of the outfits are blank for your to make your own crazy designs!
My two love playing spies and this Spy Kit is perfect for helping them crack codes and solve mysteries. It comes with magic pens to reveal hidden messages and includes 3 activity books: decoding wheels, and a spy glass. But long after the codes have been deciphered and the activity books been used, my children still use the pens to write secret messages for each other!
Pierre the Maze Detective: The Search for the Stolen Maze Stone
I’m sure you can see a theme developing here – my two LOVE anything spy/ secret mission related! This is a beautifully illustrated book with 15 full-spread illustrations of intricate, magical mazes. The locations featured are all magical and mystical which keep children engaged, such as underground cities, hot-air balloons, tree-top towns and haunted houses. You have to trace your way through each maze, spot the clues and solve the extra mystery challenges along the way. As this is a large A3 book, there is room for 2 children to complete the quizzes together!
This set includes 14 spaceships that are easy to press out and slot together (no scissors or glue required). Twelve of the craft have been individually decorated but what’s lovely is the other two are blank and ready for you to add your own inter-galactic designs to. Also included is a bonus sheet of aliens to be assembled and coloured. What I love about these spaceships are they are not flimsy and so have frequently been played with for several weeks now without falling apart!
What is a childhood without spying on our neighbours and creating missions? Walkie Talkies keep our kids occupied for ages – they love running up and down the garden and taking it out of the house to test how far it lasts! Just make sure to get one that has a long range and also ideally is charged at the mains or, like us, you’ll be charging batteries all day long!
This is a great little microphone which allows children to instantly become a roving reporter or a singing star sensation! The best thing about it is you can easily record and play back your voice and it charges just by plugging the USB into a computer. It’s commonly used in classrooms and teachers can buy whole class sets – my mum, who works in a school, discovered it for us. It’s really easy for children to use and can record up to 4 hours of audio. Plus it’s so cute to playback their lovely little interviews!
