Nature Valentines Crafts for Kids

Nature Valentine's crafts for kids to make

We don’t really go for Valentine’s Day here in a romantic kind of way but I have been thinking of how we can make Valentine’s Day a special kind of celebration for our kiddos. I like an excuse to celebrate! We’ve turned some of our usual nature crafts into heart shaped valentine’s nature crafts this week and have experimented with different nature bits and bobs to make some Nature Valentines crafts that are easy for kids to make. These are perfect forest school crafts to celebrate valentines day! And make lovely Nature Valentine’s Day outdoor activities too! After all, who doesn’t like spreading some love during these super cold winter days that we have been experiencing. Although, there is still no sign of snow – Finlay has been avidly ‘snow-watching’ since Christmas and more than once I have been awoken to some mini sobbing because he’s had a peek out of the curtains and there’s no snow. If it ever does snow – he will be ecstatic. I do wish we lived someone where we could guarantee just a couple of days of snow. So to warm us all up and to wile away the days waiting for snow – here’s some fun Nature Valentines Crafts for Kids.

Nature Hearts

Super simple craft idea but kids can make this over and over again with whatever they can find lying around. It would also be nice to try making this with lots of red or pink things, for example. But we went out in the garden on a very chilly morning and collected some nature materials for our hearts. It’s a good way to use up or celebrate the things that little people find on walks out and about (you know the ones that you keep trying to accidentally-on-purpose leave in the park!

Archie has a bit of a scissor fascination at the moment and so he was especially excited that he got to use scissors to cut up the leaves. This kept him busy for hours! He loved the snip…snip feeling of the scissors on the leaves and because the leaves were cold – they kind of stood upright making it easy for him to cut them!

Plantable Seed Paper Hearts

How to make heart plantable seed paper for valentines day gift

Seed paper is simply paper with seeds embedded into it and when it’s placed on top of soil and watered, it will germinate and begin sprouting seedlings. Eventually the paper will decompose and leave the seedlings to grow into plants. Seed paper makes a lovely Valentine’s Gift, it’s eco-friendly and is simple to make, just make sure that you let your recipient know when it’s the right time to plant your seeds!

You will need…..

Firstly, tear up your paper and shred into small pieces ( keep the paper one colour ideally). Pop the paper in a food processor or blender and add some warm water. Blend until the paper is a pulp. Sprinkle about a teaspoon of flower seeds into the mixture and stir them in. DO NOT BLEND! Stir them in carefully. We used this Wildflower seed blend. After you have added the seeds, pour the mixture into a sieve and get rid of as much water as possible. Place your pulpy paper onto a microfibre cloth or a tea towel and use a rolling pin to flatten the paper and roll out extra water. Gently place another teaspoon of seeds onto the paper, pressing them gently into the paper. Leave to dry under a heavy book to flatten and then cut into heart shapes once dry.

Rain Heart Paintings

Rain painting valentines craft for kids to make

You will need:

This is a super easy craft that is fun for all ages and makes a fun Valentine’s Craft for Toddlers and older kids. It looks so pretty when it’s finished! Cut your watercolour paper into hearts and dot acrylic paint around the heart. You can use variety of colours – light and dark colours work best. Wait until it is lightly raining or it has rained heavily and there is wet grass on your lawn or in a park. Take your watercolour paper hearts and lay on wet grass on out in the light rain. (NB: I’ve not tried this on any patio or pavement so it might be best to stick to grass to reduce staining.) Watch the paints bleed together and blend to make new colours – it’s so pretty. *Watercolour paper means that the paper will remain intact and not disintegrate when wet.

Wax Resist Heart Paintings

You will need:

Again, this is an easy craft that allows kids to create what they would like and is simple enough that small people can enjoy it too! Draw heart images (or anything you like) with a white crayon or white candle on a white piece of paper. Then, paint over the wax drawing with liquid watercolor paint. Start with a paint brush and an individual cup of watered-down liquid watercolor paint and then  swap or share colours after the first colour has been explored. The wax resists the watery liquid watercolor paint so while the paint soaks into the paper, it doesn’t blend with the wax lines, swirls, and scribbles. If you don’t have watercolour liquid paints – you can use regular poster paint but just watered down.

When your painting has dried, make a twig frame to display it in by tying the corners of the twigs with string. Better still, an easier way for kids to make the twig frame is to wrap pipe cleaners in the corners to hold the frame together.
