How to make a Bird Feeder for the garden

I am convinced Spring is just around the corner, although every time I venture outside I am thoroughly disappointed that it is still freezing! We wanted to do a Spring-type craft that was also garden related to celebrate our move to our new house and garden. We felt sorry for the poor little birdies in the frost this week and so decided to make a Bird Feeder for the garden to ensure they stay fed in the cold weather. Fin has had fun this week spotting our friendly magpies and one little Robin that come past daily. Unfortunately, the magpies are paying no attention to the bird feeder – did we use the wrong kind of seed? But Fin is delighted that the Robin tucked into the seed this week. Here’s the recipe if you’d like to make the birds in your garden happy too!
How to make a Garden Bird Feeder
You will need:
- Tin Foil
- Baking Tray
- Cookie Cutters
- Gelatine
- Straws
- Bird Seed
- Twine or ribbon or string.
- Place a variety of cookie cutters on a baking tray covered in greaseproof paper. (If you don’t have any cookie cutters, you can use silicon cake cases.)
- Make up your gelatine according to the packet instructions. You need it to be thick and gloopy or the seed will not stick together. You can also use suet for this although we’ve not tried it this way yet.
- Mix in your bird seeds and make sure that all the seeds are covered in gelatine. Press the seeds firmly into cookie cutters and place the small straws in the top centre of each cutter. Leave the seed mixture to dry overnight.
- When mixture has set hard, gently press it out of the cutters and take out the straws and tie the twine through to make a hanging hoop.
- Hang in the trees to feed the birds through the winter.
