Lakemoor Alpacas – Things to do in Dartmoor with Kids

Days out in Devon: Lakemoor Alpacas Review
*We received a visit to Lakemoor Alpacas in exchange for this review. All words, opinions and photos are my own.*
If you’re looking for a unique day out in Devon or Dartmoor with kids than a visit to Lakemoor Alpacas is a must! Visiting Alpacas is a great activity to do with kids in Dartmoor and offers a chance for kids to get close to animals and learn more about them unlike visiting zoos or farms.

Lakemoor Alpacas is close to Buckfastleigh and Buckfast Abbey in South Devon so it makes it a perfect day out to combine with a visit to the abbey or it can be combined with visiting Canonteign Falls or other Dartmoor attractions. For more events to do in neighbouring Dorset – this list of festivals and events is brilliant for things to do.
The first thing you notice when you visit Lakemoor Alpacas is the stunningly beautiful setting! It really is a little slice of Devon Heaven! The views are magnificent and you find the alpacas in a gorgeous garden setting by a farm that the owners have lovingly restored. Alpacas are South American camels and cousins of the llama but I was amazed at how calm and smaller than camels they are.
There are lots of different experiences you can have with the alpacas at Lakemoor depending on the age of your kids. For slightly older kids – you can combine hand feeding with a walk with the alpacas, for younger kids they’ll enjoy time feeding and petting the alpacas. Our kids were mesmerised with the alpacas, their gorgeous soft and fluffy fleece is incredibly tactile. After our feeding, Mark, the owner, kindly gave us a bag of shorn alpaca fleece to feel and we learnt how silky and luxurious alpaca fleece is and how it’s used to create needle felt, socks and blankets.

Alpaca Visiting with Kids in Devon
We had such a lovely time hand feeding and meeting the alpacas. They are the friendliest, most gentle animals that I’ve ever met with snuggly, strokable coats. Their comical expressive faces make them entertaining to hang around! Oh and I have serious eyelash envy after coming face to face with their gorgeous lashes! Alpacas have a kind and curious nature and are deeply intrigued by humans, it makes them great animals to get up close and personal with.
At the end of your visit you can enjoy a cookie and drink or a cream tea by a beautiful shepherds hut and enjoy a gorgeous view of the gardens.
We headed to Lakemoor Alpacas after a morning at Dartmoor National Park so it’s easy to combine an alpaca visit with a visit to one of the many attractions they have at the park.
If you’re visiting Devon or Dartmoor – I thoroughly recommend a visit to Lakemoor Alpacas for an alpaca experience you’ll never forget in a gorgeous setting. Alpaca walking is great for those who wish to try an activity that takes you away from the hectic hustle and bustle of urban life – it’s a relaxing experience to enjoy Devon nature at its best!
