Ideas for Minimising the Toy Clutter: Toy Storage Organisation
I realised that I had written a fair few posts showing the before of our house but hadn’t updated you since with the renovation work that we’ve already done! So, over the next few weeks, I’ll try and update the bits we’ve done to the house already. Needless to say, it’s looking sooooooo much better and we’re really chuffed with it. The house really feels like ours now and is becoming more and more like home! Like many families, we have lots of toys with 4 kids and so I’m always on the lookout for toy storage organisation ideas. Keep reading for quick and easy storage ideas to keep kid’s toys organised!
Once we had finished decorating the room that we call the ‘family room’ which joins to the kitchen, we needed to do something about the toy chaos we were in. Because we have 4 kiddos and our youngest is only one – I don’t really want to have a complete overhaul and give any toys to charity, just yet, because Archie may enjoy them in years to come. So, instead, in order to organise our toy clutter – I took a trip to the organisational Mecca that is IKEA for toy storage organisation!
This may not be one of my most interesting posts but I’m looking forward to sharing how our house is shaping up and already the organisation of our family room – has made a HUGE difference to how we live! We simply bought the ubiquitous Kallax Storage from IKEA as a toy storage organiser – I did spend a while searching for something that was a little different but nothing beats IKEA on price! We filled the Kallax with IKEA grey/ white baskets and a grey paper tray for all the colouring books and used some old, vintage tins and jam jars for the pens. These have to be kept way up high because Archie’s favourite thing to do at the moment – is Draw! Just not always on paper unfortunately! If I have to scrub pen off the kids bunk beds or toy boxes again………….I’m going to go mad!

Each of the kids are lucky enough to have a special toy box of their own in their bedrooms that my parents bought them all when they were born – they’re brilliant for storing some of the bulkier toys so I use the Kallax boxes to keep smaller items like puzzles and toy cars organised. I found these cute blackboard labels off Amazon and used a chalk pen to label them as toy storage organisers. I did feel a complete organisational geek writing these out and some of my friends think I’m loopy but it’s helped the kids be able to find their toys easily and, in theory put them back in the right place.

How to organise Kid’s puzzles
In the kid’s bedroom, I organised their games using a cupboard organiser which I think is meant to be used for jumpers? Anyhow, it works well for games and means they can find them easily. My favourite space saving toys tip is to take the puzzles out of boxes and pop them in zip lock bags but not forgetting to cut out the picture of the design and adding that too!
I unfortunately do still have craft stuff all over the house! So, that’s my next mission to organise but I bought this old dresser off eBay and I’ve made a start organising the craft stuff into boxes and adding the smaller items to this cute vintage Sewing Box – mainly because I just liked the sewing box! We also added the kid’s DVDs so they can access them easily.
Lastly, for items that it’s nice to have out all the time – such as Archie’s toys that he likes to help himself too – I’m using these lovely Felt Storage Baskets from Room to Grow. We keep the children’s books in their bedrooms but these felt baskets are good for keeping the library books organised as we tend to borrow so many, and they don’t look out of place in a living room. We went to the library at half term and borrowed 26 books to keep all of them entertained! Elodie read 7 books over half term and Orla can sit for hours making up the words to the books that she reads!
So, that’s our Family Room Toy Organisation sorted – now for the rest of the house!
