Handmade Clay Fingerprint Christmas Decorations

As I’ve mentioned recently, I am hoping that in years to come we’ll have a Christmas Tree adorned with decorations that remind us of places we’ve been and adventures we’ve had. So we made some Handmade Clay Fingerprint Christmas Tree Decorations I’d like it to become that every year our tree is like a little memory book to reminisce with! My favourite tree decoration when I was growing up were two little fabric mice who didn’t look very Christmassy at all but I used to place them far apart and then move them closer to each other as it edged closer to Christmas!!!
This week, we’ve been making Christmas decorations with the children, hopefully ones that they can keep and we can bring out each year as little memories.
They turned out a little messier than I hoped (I should have used more pastel colours I think!) but that’s part and parcel of making decorations with children and they were delighted with them which is the main thing!
How to make Handmade Clay Christmas Tree Decorations
If you’d like to make your own, you will need…..
- Acrylic Paint
- Air drying Clay
- Letter stamps
- Small paintbrushes
- Christmas shaped cutters
- Large skewer
- Spray varnish (optional)
It’s dead easy to do, you simply roll the clay out to just under 1cm thick. Too thin and the will crack and snap when dry. Cut out your shapes with some Christmas themed cutters and press in your fingerprint. (We found we had to press quite hard!) It’s best to do this fairly quickly as if the clay starts to harden it won’t take the shape of your fingerprint. Add your name using letter stamps and leave to dry overnight. When dry, fill in your letters and fingerprint in gold paint. We found that gold made the patterns in the fingerprint (I’m sure there is a technical name for this) stand out more clearly! You can then paint the rest of the clay in acrylic paint. I would have liked to use lighter colours but this is all we could find in acrylic. I’m sure you can use other types of paint, we are hoping using acrylic will make them last! For the final touch, you can spray with paint varnish.
Our children loved making their own decorations, we may just have to make creating Handmade Clay Fingerprint Christmas Tree Decorations an annual tradition!
