Making Flower Pot Garden Windchimes!

I don’t know about you, but I am beginning to think about decorating our garden in a similar way to a house. I’d love it to be full of things that remind us of happy memories or adventures in the garden. So far we have a chalk board in our garden and the kiddos are forever decorating it with pictures which often extends to covering the patio with doodles too. So, I thought they would enjoy a garden craft activity to make their own flower pot garden windchimes. If you’d like to give it a whirl, here’s how to make your own……………….

We started by painting some mini flower pots with pretty patterns in acrylic paint. We chose gold but you can paint flowers, trees, or simple multi coloured stripes would look amazing painted onto your flowerpot. Acrylic paint is more hardwearing for using outside but remember to cover your surfaces well, as if your children paint like mine – it gets everywhere! Remember that if you want to draw any designs on, your flower pot will be hanging upside down (we made that mistake first time over!)

Whilst your paint on your plant pot dries, take some string or ribbon cut into 3-4 lengths of about 30cm.

Next, thread a mixture of beads, pretty buttons and bells onto your string. You can thread anything on really. We did add bells but they rust after a while, so if you want to do that you’ll need to pick rustproof or outdoor bells. But shells make a lovely sound against the pot too. Make sure you leave about 10cm on each ribbon as ties. Pop your flower pot upside down and pull each strand through the hole in the top of your flower pot and then tie together in one big knot, leaving it poking out of the top.

Tie a very large knot in an additional piece of string or ribbon and thread the opposite way through your pot so the loose end is at the top and the big knot is underneath the flower pot.

You’re now ready to hang your beautiful windchime in your garden and listen out for your very own chimes in the breeze!
