Make a Wishing Word Bird Story Craft. How to combine story writing and painting to make a beautiful bird!
I think it’s always good when you find a craft that can last a while because it creates a story or it has several purposes and we came across one this weekend. If you’re looking for a craft which combines story writing and painting, this a great one! Fin wanted to do a spot of painting in the garden but Elle wanted to write a story so to keep them both happy we decided to make some Wishing Word Birds to hang in the trees!
To make them, you will need……..
- White or coloured Card
- Coloured Paper
- Ribbon
- Feathers
- Glitter
- Paint
- PVA Glue
- Black Pen
- Hole punch
- Start by cutting out 4 card birds. Paint the birds. While the paint is still wet; sprinkle glitter on your birds for some extra sparkle!

While you are waiting for your birds to dry, take your paper and write a story about the birds. (Younger children could write facts about birds or draw their story.) You can take your time over this and make your story as long or as short as you like. Isn’t Elodie’s spelling here the cutest!

Concertina your paper lengthways and fold in half again widthways to make wings.

Glue some feathers onto your dry birds and leave to dry again. Use a black pen to draw an eye on each side and a beak if you like!
- Make a small slit in the middle of your bird and poke your concertina story through the slit and fan out, to make the wings. You can add two sheets of paper, if your story was long!
- Use a hole punch to make a hole in the top of the bird. Tie the ribbon through to make a hanging hoop so that you hang up your bird.
- Hang your birds in the window or on the trees to enjoy the sunshine!
