An Autumnal Firework Night
It feels like winter is chasing Autumn away and I’m now noticing all the signs of frost which, accompanied with blue skies, makes the best kind of weather anyway. We had the loveliest of firework nights, we started the day by making a firework craft activity and ended the day with hotdogs, apple bobbing and sparklers. Followed later by fireworks at a local display. Finlay had been apple bobbing with his Beaver pack that week and been hailed ‘a champion at apple bobbing!!’ so he was keen to show off his skills – who was I to stop him?! We tried some Autumn Crafts – check out our favourite conker making activities and Autumn Leaf crafts for kids too.

Elodie had asked to do some toffee apples but we failed at making toffee apples a couple of years ago and so settled for making Apple Firework Chunks. Basically, we chopped apples into chunks and then dipped them in melted chocolate and added sprinkles to make our own Apple sparkly fireworks. Delicious!

We had a few sparklers in our garden before heading out to our firework display. There is something magical about holding real sparks of fire in your hand and waving them around to write your name. I wonder how many kids write their name in fireworks all over England on that night. I love Bonfire Night, I love that it’s special to Britain – it’s our own individual party that’s not repeated around the world, there are only a few celebrations that we have all to ourselves. And I do love fireworks! Each one draws a unique pattern onto the sky, never to be repeated exactly no matter how many are ignited and sent to their sky-bound destiny. I found my camera to have a ‘firework setting’ which was pretty exciting and so I took lots of these crazy firework photos-that-look-a-little-bit-like-a-kid’s-drawing-on-an-etch-a-sketch but they were fun to take! Make sure you check out this post for keeping kids safe on bonfire night.

I had such a notion for fresh air and crunchy leaves on Sunday too and so we headed to our local woods. My new snuggly coat made for a perfectly wonderful Autumn walk. I am happiest in Autumn clothes; snuggly jumpers and scarves and warm boots are the way forward for me!
The kids climbed their favourite trees (they’ve even named them) Finlay may have fallen off a few times! The littler kids climbed hills and ran down them at such a speed that I was convinced they would fall, but they didn’t! Orla searched to find her treasure – the cups from the acorns. The acorn nuts themselves she discards; the tops with their rough exteriors and smooth insides are her “fairy cups,” each one with a small “handle” below. On occasion they will be soup bowls or hats. She looked out for acorns all the walk round and filled her pockets.
A couple of hours in woodland, golden Autumn sunshine, and a stretch of our legs is always a recipe for a good Sunday. And then home to a roast afterwards too!
