Fun around the Breakfast Bar
Having lived in our home now for 3 years now, we’ve nearly finished the downstairs – well, finished in part, they’ll always be little bits and bobs to do and the epic job of the doing the hallway which I think we’ll leave until last! In this time, we have done a fair few so-called ‘big projects’, such as a kitchen extension, two bathrooms, removing woodchip almost everywhere, adding a patio and fireplace – phew! Listed like that, it’s an impressive list! We’re quite good with cracking on when we start a new room, but then seem to have a lull and it takes us a while to put the finishing touches together to complete a room. Right now, our downstairs ‘snug’ (as we call it) has just been plastered and we are starting the search for brightly coloured wallpaper. This will shock those who know our house! Mostly our walls are white and peppered with brightly coloured this and that and our kitchen is completely all white so for us to try a patterned wallpaper is a little bit unusual!
Anyone who’s a regular reader will know we had a complete renovation of our kitchen and family room around 18 months ago. We knocked our leaky conservatory and small kitchen together so that the kitchen went across the back of the house and adjoined to the room we call the ‘Family Room’. I was excited to really make it our own as the old kitchen was freezing, tiny and totally falling apart. We have been delighted with the end result and it’s a space that we love it and spend most of our time in it. I often pinch myself that it’s ours.
Up until recently, the breakfast bar was a dumping group and hardly used because it was always covered in ‘stuff’. We held off buying breakfast bar stools because we knew Archie would want to climb on them constantly and thought it best to wait until he turned 2. We also hadn’t found the exact style we wanted (simple but with a pop of colour) until we found some we loved via Cult Furniture. They’re simple enough to blend in with the kitchen but still have lovely coloured legs to add some personality.
The stools are a Gamechanger! The kitchen is definitely the most important room in a home for me. It is where everything seems to happen – where things are dumped and lost and swiftly re-discovered. It’s where we bake fun things and mundane things. It is where we have hosted kids birthday parties and dinner parties and where I spend many hours of my life. And now the addition of a functioning breakfast bar with stools has made it even more of a central hub. It is where we hope to sit for hours with friends drinking tea and putting the world to rights, it’s where the kids do homework and drawing and ‘come to help mummy’ bake and make. It’s the perfect space for wrapping presents, the kiddos now sit up there to paint and play with play dough, it’s become such a sociable space!
Ok, there is a fair amount of bickering and negotiating over who sits there for meals – with 4 kids and space for only 3 stools this is a little issue. Ideas on the back of a postcard if you can help us solve that one! I feel a rota coming on for the breakfast bar (eye rolling) But, that aside we’re loving our useful breakfast bar!
