How to dress up a terracotta pot: painted Planters for Summer!
For my stash busting Craft Challenge number #6, I decided to use up some spray paint and brighten up some terracotta plant pots for the garden!
Our garden could certainly do with some love, the building work to our kitchen means that our garden is a little wild and our crumbling patio is covered in plaster dust!
Last year, the lovely Mr M put back together a delapidated playhouse that I bought for the kids off Ebay. I’m forever buying bargains off Ebay but don’t always think how they’ll need to be ‘updated’ or ‘repaired.’ But Mr M’s hard work paid off and the kiddos have been happily playing in it and creating adventures in their playhouse ever since, so it was well worth it.
However, I wanted to do a little something to brighten up the playhouse and so I’m on a mission over the summer to personalise the kid’s playhouse – starting with some Metallic Painted Terracotta Plant Pots.
Luckily, the kids decided they preferred one pot over an other and have claimed a different spray painted pot as their own! Elodie preferred the pink and silver striped whereas Fin took the bright yellow pot as his own. We planted the pots at the weekend and now they’re taking responsibility for watering their own pots, so we’ll see how long they last!
If you’d like to try spray painting some terracotta plant pots of your own, all you will need is…..
- Terracotta Plant Pots
- Masking Tape
- Variety of spray paints. I used Pinty Plus Evolution Acrylic Spray Paints
- Pinty Plus Clear Spray Varnish or Clear Spray Sealant
1. Start by spray painting the base colour all over the pot. The good thing about acrylic spray paint, is that most colours I tried seemed to cover each other pretty well and so it doesn’t matter which colours you pair together.
2. I was impressed that the paint is touch dry almost instantly and definitely within 15 minutes, but leave for several hours before adding tape or additional coats.
3. If you’d like a stripy pot, use masking tape and make stripes across the terracotta pot – tape all the way round the pot to keep the stripes even. Spray the next coat of paint, preferably a metallic colour, over the pot. Leave to dry for 30 minutes before carefully removing the tape.
4. For the rim of the pot, cover the whole pot with a white paper covering, taping close to the rim. Spray paint the rim colour and leave to dry for 30 minutes before carefully removing the tape. You can also sticky back plastic to cover the pot, as long as you remove carefully.
5. Before using your pots, spray a couple of light coats of varnish or sealant to help keep the colour vibrant.
The possibilities are endless, you could try adding spots or stars to the painted pots too!
