Summer Kindness Elves: Simple Ways to Spread Kindness with Kids

You may remember my discovery last year of the Kindness Elves as an alternative to the Christmas Elf on the Shelf. Our first Kindness Elves Christmas had a mixed reception from my kiddos! They adored the Elves, adored spreading kindness in our neighbourhood  but not so much amongst each other!

So, as we approach the summer holidays I was so excited to discover that there are now SUMMER KINDNESS ELVES! How cute are these? I love the new pink and green summery colour scheme! If you haven’t heard of the Kindness Elves before, you can read more about them here….. They are the brainchild of Anna from The Imagination Tree and were created to help children spread simple acts of kindness around their communities. The new green elves are ‘The Nature Lovers’ who love to be outside playing and exploring! They are tree climbers, forest explorers, beach diggers, wave jumpers, leaf throwers and puddle splashers! They care for the environment and all animals, both wild and pets at home. They take a special interest in the plants and flowers, cultivating their own beautiful gardens to bring happiness to others!

The new Pink Elves are ‘The Wish Makers’ who are fabulously inventive and love nothing more than to create wonderful surprises for others to enjoy! They decorate places beautifully, wrap gifts and set up amazing treasure hunts for little ones to enjoy. If there’s a celebration happening the Wish Makers will be in the middle of it, probably covered in glitter and confetti! They love to make wishes come true in whatever way they can and celebrate the everyday moments too.

After all the very sad and harrowing events here over the last few weeks, the tragic fire, terrorist attacks in both Manchester and two in London – it seems to me that now is a very good time to care for our neighbours and communities with little acts of kindness and this is something practical that children can get to grips with.

To this day, especially in times of disaster, I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers — so many caring people in this world.” (Fred Rodgers)

I have been reliant on the above quote in the last few weeks. It has helped when trying to explain the tragic events that have happened over the last few weeks to my children. And I know the Kindness Elves (however cute they are) can’t change the reality of this harsh world but sometimes it’s the little things that can snowball into something much bigger and hopefully starting small will help our kids to share in the magic of kindness and develop empathy skills.

So, over the summer holidays – we’re going to complete a small summer challenge here. Every week, the children have to choose an kindness activity from our ‘Random Acts of Kindness Jar’ and every now and then – I’ll pop little notes with kindness challenges from our new little elf visitors – the Wishmaker Elves (our newest elves are called Rose and Sage and they join Floss and Flora who we had at Christmas!)
