Turning a home into a space for the whole family takes a lot of time and effort. We’ve lived in our current house now for 2 and a bit years and have spent most of that time making updates. We’ve spent a long time renovating our house and getting the interiors just right for everyone. A modern family can have a lot of requirements, especially when there are children of various ages to cater for. But for me, one of my top requirements is just that everything looks good and that it is a fun house for the whole family!I think there are a few rules you can follow if you want to use modern design in your home but make it suitable for the whole family too.
Make It a Home for Everyone
I don’t think there’s any point trying to ignore the fact that you have children in your home. You need to take them into account when you design your home interiors and think about all the mess they’re capable of making. Storage is a huge necessity in any modern family home, and we have made sure we have plenty of it to store both the kids’ things and everything else. But it’s not just about storage. A home for all the family also needs to have space for everyone, from enough seating in the family room to areas where children can have fun and be creative. One of my favourite books on a creative family home is ‘Creative Family Spaces’ by Ashlyn Gibson – it’s full of fab ideas!
Look for Fun Furniture Designs
Getting to start with a blank slate to furnish a room is great, but even if you’re only picking out one or two new things, you can look for some modern pieces to update your home. A lot of modern furniture design uses fun shapes and styles to make things more interesting. The Cattelan Italia furniture range has some items that demonstrate this, such as their quirky DNA bookcase and the Yo-Yo coffee table. By choosing the right furniture, you can create a playful home that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Use Lots of Colour
I think you need plenty of colour in a family home. It makes your home look bright and cheerful, which every parent needs at the end of a long day! We’ve put plenty of bright colours into our home, but they’re also tempered by lots of neutral and darker shades as well. We tend to paint all our walls white (I find it too stressful choosing different coloured paint!) but then have plenty of coloured prints, cushions and decor everywhere. Use bright colours for accents so you can create layers and have certain features stand out.
Enjoy Fun Family Tech
It’s difficult to have a family home now that doesn’t have any technology in it. But I don’t think that means you have to spend all day in front of the TV. Technology can help you have lots of family fun, and it can make family life a lot more convenient too. Think about what you like to do as a family. If you love music, a wirelessly connected music system could be a great addition to your home, for example.
There are lots of ways you can create a modern home for your family. You don’t need to be moving into a new home to make some updates. I think we’ll be forever changing our home as we go!
