We started a new family tradition this year to try and help us focus on the New Year in a positive way and be thankful for the lovely times we had in 2016. I love the feeling of a new year – 2017 is stretched out before us and January is a month for reflecting and planning, dreaming up new dreams and new adventures. I really wanted to spend some time intentionally being thankful for what has been a wonderful year. As ever, it didn’t quite go to plan as the children had been crabby and bickering all day and so we bundled them up and took them for a walk around the block to shift some of the moodiness before sitting down to reflect! We used our Advent Calendar Tree and we all wrote down 3 (or more if we wanted) things that we were thankful for in 2016 and wanted to remember. We used little star gift tags and decorated them before hanging them on the tree. Then we wrote down 3 things that we wanted to do as a family in 2017 and I’ve made this into our family bucket list.
I think next year, we’ll do it differently and I’ve set up a jam jar with the gift tags so we can write our thankful memories as we go throughout the year as it was hard to reflect back on 2016 and most of our memories had happened in the last couple of months!
Things that we were thankful for this year included…..
- Having baby Archie as a new addition to our family. “He’s just wonderful” said Elodie!
- Creating our vegetable garden (Daddy)
- Going to the Beach (Orla)
- Our family time in Ireland
- Moving into our new house and beginning to make it a home
Rather than make any resolutions this year, as I’ve already said, I want to focus on settling down as a family of 6 and hopefully getting a good work/family balance and making time for doing lots of family things together. I loved reading this post by Carie from Space for the Butterflies which said everything I have been feeling over the last few weeks in a far more eloquent way! (I’m blaming my lack of sleep for my lack of words at the minute!)
So, here is our (hopefully achievable) bucket list (we had to remove some of the more ambitious ones and save for a few years time such as mummy’s road trip around Europe!)
